Tycoon
1992
English lyrics by Tim Rice
Original French lyrics by Luc Plamondon
Music by Michel Berger

"A so-called perfect society, not
too many years or miles away,
that fails to bring happiness
to either privileged or dispossessed."

Tim Rice describing Tycoon, May 1992

Only The Very Best

In 1978 Michel Berger and Luc Plamondon released their Starmania album in France. Over the subsequent years, the album and concerts of the songs became such hits that a stage show was mounted in France in 1988.

Michel Berger and Luc Plamondon asked Tim Rice to adapt the show to English. The translated show was re-titled Tycoon.

With an English staging in mind, an album of the Tycoon songs was released in 1992. The cast of the Tycoon album contained recording-industry giants such as Cyndi Lauper, Celine Dion, Ronnie Spector and Tom Jones. Tracks from Tycoon made the charts in France, and "The World Is Stone" made it to umber 15 in the UK.

A full-length theatrical version of Tycoon was written for a production in Paris in October of 1993. Tycoon received its American premeire at The Union Dinner Theatre at the The University Of Texas At El Paso in 1995.
