The Lyrics of Tim Rice was originally a television programme for Yorkshire Televsion, Ltd. in 1985. The format was an interview with Tim, conducted by Paul Gambaccini, interspersed with performances of Tim Rice songs. Paul Gambaccini also had Mike Batt in the studio, and footage from an interview with Andrew Lloyd Webber. In addition, Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus were brought on so that the three creators of Chess could discuss the show together. The programme lasted around an hour and twenty minutes. It opened with Tim singing a bit of "That's My Story" while accompanying himself on guitar, and ended with Tim (vocals) and Hank Marvin (guitar) performing the full song. Most of the songs from shows were semi-staged with the sets and costumes resembling the way they appeared in the theater. The performers included Cantabile, Barbara Dickson, David Essex, Murray Head, The Jean Pearce Children, Paul Jones, Paul Nicholas, Elaine Paige, Marti Webb, and Colm Wilkinson.
The television programme was then edited for video release, cutting out much of the interview footage (incuding the segments with Andrew Lloyd Webber, Mike Batt, and Benny Andersson & Bjorn Ulvaeus) and four of the songs ("The Likes Of Us", "Any Dream Will Do", "Monks' Introduction", and "Embassy Lament"). Tim Rice's solo "That's My Story" introduction was dropped as well. The songs which were included on the video were reordered. The video features Barbara Dickson, David Essex, Murray Head, Paul Nicholas, Elaine Paige, Tim Rice, Marti Webb, and Colm Wilkinson. Although Tim and Hank Marvin's rendition of "That's My Story" was kept as the final number, the song is used to accompany the credits, resulting in the majority of the video being shrunk to a square in the upper left hand corner of the screen as the credits roll by.
